How to measure waist circumference

Waist Circumference Measurement Protocol
(WHO standard method)

Measurement site: Midway between the 10th rib and the iliac crest

  1. Ensure your abdomen is unobstructed by clothing
  2. Stand relaxed, with both feet slightly apart in a straight and upright position
  3. Use your hands to locate your lowest palpable rib and use a pen to draw a horizontal line that represents it
  4. Use your hand to locate the highest point (iliac crest) on your hip bone and use a pen to draw a horizontal line that represents it
  5. Measure the mid-point between the 2 horizontal lines and use a pen to draw a horizontal line at this midpoint (the 3rd line)
  6. Repeat steps 2, 3, 4 on the other side
  7. Place the inferior edge of a nonstretchable measuring tape around your waist at the midpoint horizontal line (the 3rd line)
  8. Check each side to make sure that the tape crosses over the midpoint horizontal line
  9. Ensure the tape is parallel to the floor and fits snugly but does not compress the skin
  10. Take the waist circumference measurement at the end of a normal expiration
